Whiskey in the jar

As I was going over the far famed Kerry mountains
I met with Captain Farrell, and his money he was counting.
I first produced my pistol, and I then produced my rapier.
Sayin’ stand and deliver, for I am a bold deceiver,

Refräng:
Mush-a ring dum-a do dum-a da
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There’s whiskey in the jar

I counted out his money, and it made a pretty penny.
I put it in me pocket and I took it home to Jenny.
She sighed and she swore that she never would deceive me,
but the Devil take the women, for they never can be easy

[Refräng]

I went into my chamber, all for to take a slumber,
I dreamt of gold and jewels and for sure it was no wonder.
But Jenny drew me charges and she filled them up with water,
Then sent for Captain Farrell to be ready for the slaughter.

[Refräng]

T’was early in the morning, just before I rose to travel,
Up comes a band of footmen and likewise Captain Farrell.
I first produced me pistol, for she’d stolen away me rapier,
But I couldn’t shoot the water so a prisoner I was taken.

[Refräng]

If anyone can aid me, t’is my brother in the army,
If I can find his station in Cork or in Killarney.
And if he’ll go with me, we’ll go roving in Kilkenny,
And I’m sure he’ll treat me better than me darling sportling Jenny

[Refräng]

Now there’s some take delight in the carriages a-rollin’,
And others take delight in the hurley and the bowlin’.
But I take delight in the juice of the barley,
And courting pretty fair maids in the morning bright and early

[Refräng]

The wild rover

The wild rover är en av de som oftast känns igen ute på våra spelningar, och som folk kan sjunga med i (och klappa) i refrängen. Vi kör den  G dur som så många andra låtar..!

Här nedan kommer texten på The wild rover – håll tillgodo

I’ve been a wild rover for many’s the year,
and I spent all me money on whiskey and beer.
And now I’m returning with gold in great store,
and I never will play the wild rover no more.

Refräng:
And it’s no, nay, never! No, nay, never, no more,
will I play the wild rover. No nay never no more!

I went to an alehouse I used to frequent,
and I told the landlady me money was spent.
I asked her for credit, she answered me ”nay,
such a custom as yours I could have any day”.

(Refräng)

I took from me pocket ten sovereigns bright,
and the landlady’s eyes opened wide with delight.
She said ”I have whiskeys and wines of the best,
and I’ll take you upstairs and show you the rest”.

(Refräng)

I’ll have none of your whiskeys nor fine Spanish Wines,
For your words show you clearly as no friend of mine.
There’s others most willing to open a door,
To a man coming home from a far distant shore.

(Refräng)

I’ll go home to me parents, confess what I’ve done,
and I’ll ask them to pardon their prodigal son.
And when they’ve caressed me as oft times before
then I never will play the wild rover no more.
